Assignment 04 (Blog Assignment)

The Butcher Bunny

Mark Ryden's works never fail to intrigue me. His interpretation of Surrealism takes a turn from the usually-dark Surrealist pieces. I like how he uses cartoon-like illustrations and at the same time injects a certain kind of warped aura into his works.

What I like about this painting is that it might seem like one which portrays a certain kind of innocent child-like painting. But at a closer look you can see that there are surprising elements being brought in. Like how the "cute" bunny is cutting up the meat with a saw. Also the midget actually representing Abe Lincoln.

The commendable part of his works are that there are underlying meanings. He makes use of odd elements to get his audiences out of their comfort zone like the slabs of meat and softcore gore and yet at the same time uses cultural elements like Abe Lincoln to set a familiarity, but bringing it into a different situation.

I truly find his works very inspiring! For more of his works you can view them at this website.
